This book provides a comprehensive examination of the farming and processing components of Fiji's sugar industry. Many important lessons have been learnt or reaffirmed in carrying out this research: for example, the critical importance of secure land title to the farming sector; the need for a cane payment scheme that provides incentives for farmers to maximize the volume and quality of their output; the need for good corporate governance in the milling sector to overcome the agency problems leading to its poor performance; and the industry rationalization necessary to adjust to the lower prices received for exports to the EU. The book is required reading for anyone interested in fully understanding the economics of this industry.
