A rare sociological perspective on Fiji's crime problem. This is a collection of eight concise, thought provoking essays that explore different dimensions of crime in Fiji. Moving from the general to the specific, the author begins with a description of the general features of crime in Fiji society. It then touches upon a number of key issues that underlie the present law and order problem in the country. Follows is a chapter on juvenile delinquency and the socio-cultural factors that contribute to this growing problem, then a sociological analyses of patterns of alcohol and marijuana use. The chapter on rape is a thorough inquiry into the nature, causes and possible solutions for rape in Fiji society. Also included are chapters on homicide and infanticide. The author then offers insights into some of the complex processes that contribute to the high imprisonment rate of young Fijian males. The final chapter emphasises some of the many practical proposals offered in the preceding chapters for reducing the crime problem.
